Monday

Dear Friends

It is with great sadness that we have to tell you that Ali passed away last night on Sunday 22 June at 10.35pm

It was very calm and peaceful and those of us who loved him so dearly were by his side constantly and supported him to the end as he would have wished.

We now have to make all the necessary arrangements and will announce our plans as soon as we can.

Sleep tight Ali and God Bless.

With Lots of Love

Ali was the most decent all-round good guy that I have ever known. He has made my life richer and I will always remember him as he was before he became ill. An incrediby kind, generous, stupidly funny, energetic, athletic, football-and-music-loving petrol-head.

Everyone who met Ali recognised his innate goodness immediately and took him into their hearts. It is so cruel that good guys like Ali have to go so young and with so much left undone. The world is a poorer place this morning.

Our thoughts are with you all.

Dear Diana, Ian, Simon, Jo, Charlie, Archie and Jeanette,

Although we knew this was coming, it makes it no less upsetting, but we take comfort in knowing that Ali packed more into his 36 years than most people do in a lifetime and that he has always been surrounded by love and laughter.

I remember the first time I ever saw him when I was about five and he was about four and was moving in next door. I remember wrapping him up in loo roll at birthday parties, getting covered in bruises while roller skating, chasing escaped guinea pigs around the garden, walking dogs, swimming in the rain and a thousand other things.

You raised an amazing, kind and generous man, but then coming from such stock he’d have had a hard job being anything else. I consider myself lucky to have known him. My family and I have loved him for over 30 years and will continue to do so. Everytime we think of him, he’ll be there, smiling, together with three pointers and a Heinz 57 from next door.

Our thoughts, prayers and continued support are with you all. I know Ali will be watching over you.

Lots of love

J-A and all my family

Close your eyes...verse 3
……………....
Is life one big chairlift? Is that silly of me?
Its easy to imagine, especially if you ski.
Some of us choose a bumpy ride, some of us live for the day.
Some of its our choice, and the rest is our destiny
For you each pylon, a challenge fulfilled, excitement, pleasure and joy
Each day enjoyed, happy, fun, like a baby with a new toy
Open one eye, peak infront, can you see who’s there?
Family, friends, you ve heard about who have always cared.
Peak behind, familiar faces, some are in the queue
There is love in every breath of air circled all around you.
This world seems a smaller place or that’s what people say
But we re like a tiny snowflake in the alps, before it melts away.
The stars are all around us, it makes us stop and think
I m sure this chairlift, with these stars has a special link
And now your pain has parted and your chair has calmly stopped
Just remember, all of us, will one day join you at the top.

Night night
Sleep tight Ali.

When I come to the end of the road,
and the sun has set for me.
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room.
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little—but not too long,
and not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that was once shared.
Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take, and each must go alone.
It’s all a part of the master’s plan, a step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know.
Bear your sorrow in good deeds. Miss me, but let me go.

Although I didn't really know him, this somehow made me think of Ali and 'team Rainback' - as well as all the amazing friends you have out there.

I am with you always, each and every day,
Do not get upset because you cannot see me,
I'm locked up in your heart and I've thrown away the key.

I will always be behind you in everything you do,
I'll be your wall of support, unbreakable even by you,
Never give up hope, always do your best,
Remember who you are - you're better than the rest.

If you are ever down, simply shut your eyes,
Look deep into your mind, I'm hidden in disguise.
Keep searching and you'll find me, for I will never leave,
I'm everything inside you, I'm every breath you breathe.

When my younger brother died 18 months ago, this poem was given to me
When I am dead
Cry for me a little
Think of me sometimes
But not too much
Sometimes recall
As I was in life
But not for too long
Leave me in peace
As I shall leave you in peace
And while you live
Let your thoughts be of the living

Dear All

We can only echo all the above tributes - what a wonderful man Ali was. As a young lad he and Si came "patterning" Gemma - giving up their "teenage" time to help out someone less fortunate than themselves. How proud you must be of your sons Diana and Ian. They are such a credit to you both. The impact Ali has clearly made on his fellow beings is something to treasure. You are in our thoughts, and we send our love to you all, Sally and family

Dear Diana and Team Rainback,

I am so, so saddened to learn about Ali. I, like so many put what looked like the inevitable to the back burner and concentrated on the all the positive thoughts Ali gave to us.

Ali was the most generous, kind and funny guy. A credit to you as parents and the whole family who have been totally amazing throughout this wretched time.

Thank you for taking time to write, so considerate to the last. We all take a little comfort safe in the knowledge that he was surrounded with peace, love and support of his amazing family.

Ali for me was and will always remain a once in a lifetime person, a person who leaves a mark on you forever, a real diamond, an inspiration! He made you laugh without trying and had such a genuine interest in everybody he met. The curry house incident with Franny will always be a classic memory.

I am sure he has his skis waxed and ready to ride the ultimate powder safe in the knowledge you are so proud of him and that he made a real difference to so many, not only his family and friends but the thousands of people he taught to ski.

Ali, wherever you are, whatever you are doing, thanks for sharing this Time with us, the memories of College and especially the 3 valleys are priceless.

Until we meet again, sleep tight Ali and God bless you and your wonderful family always.

Dear Team Rainback

Its not often I cry but as I sit here in Australia having just read the previous 100 comments I am blubbing like a 3 year old. It takes a special person and someone that touched me very deeply to bring out emotions like this so mate we might not have managed a face to face recently but talking to you on Skype over the last 6 months has been a truely inspirational experiance. I have seen a few memories mentioned here and would like to add a few of my own that most of you wont understand but here goes..

The Spunky Seaman of Boro Road HC
Midnight comando raids on the squat of Curtis and Geach
The almost trip to Alton Towers at 5am
Kung Fu Laser quest
The love hate relationship with me and my MUFC
the Clint Eastwood of the Norfolk Broads( BB gun style)
Giving me the confidence to ski after my accident and helping me realise that nothing could hold me back.

Mate you have been an inspirational character over the last 15 years of my life and a legend in the last 6 months. I now have a special reason to head to the casino down here at some ungodly hour of the morning to watch the Arsenal Man United game and I wont even begrudge you the occasional win.

Rest easy special mate

Lots of love and hugs

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

keep strong team Rainback,

So sorry to hear your sad news. I only met Ali once, in the waiting room of the radiotherapy clinic (marking my exercise books) but have followed the blog ever since. Such a brave guy and wonderful family.....
You can shed tears that he is gone
Or you can smile because he has lived
You can close your eyea and pray that he'll come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him
Or you can be full of the love you shared
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday
You can remember him and only that he's gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on

You can cry and close your mind
be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what he'd want:
Smile, open your eyes, Love and go on.

I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Dear Team Rainback

A poem that affected me when my dad died - I always remembered the last two lines during difficult times.

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

We met Ali through ski instruction, very much enjoyed our time with him and looked forward to the warm ”welcome back” greetings annually in Courchevel. Olwena particularily appreciated the care with which Ali picked ski instructors to turn the lows into highs.

Except for Olwena once being introduced to Jeanette by Ali, we have not met "Team Rainback" but, having met Ali, finding out through the Blog that he came from such a loving and supportive family and attracted such good, loyal and loving friends came as no surprise.

We can only hope knowing that Ali will be remembered with respect and fondness, by so many of us (even those of us who barely knew him) will be of some small comfort both now and in the future.

Dear Team Rainback

So many words to sum up the sadness we all feel on hearing of your loss.

I asked my 11 year old to write about learning to ski with Ali...

"Ali, you made me enjoy skiing soooo much. I remember skiing through loads of trees on an amazing trail with you speeding in front. I remember when you made us ski down the gun barrel with our eyes shut! You showed us your singing hat and we really believed it until we realised you were whistling. Every time we skied down the Indians you called out to your friend the Chief. Do you remember that we ate loads of sweets on the chair lifts - they were delicious. Every skiing lesson I had with you made me more confident because if you put your mind to something you did it - like making New Generation and writing a song for the football world cup. I even loved your jokes especially the one about the dog - Bad Minton!

We met Ali as a ski instructor with New Gen and he became a friend. He was simply the best and will remain a big influence in our lives.

It is a great comfort to know that he had such a strong family to help him through his final days.

With love to you all
