Bonjour everyone
I had a rotten day yesterday because of a bad headache but felt much better after the morphine! Simon came in the evening and we had a laugh which was great.
Today Jet and I had a quiet morning together and then I slept all afternoon. Si and Tom came to see me this evening for a glass of wine with Mum and Dad and to eat my chocolate! Thanks guys!
More morphine so night night.
Lots of Love

Sleep well Ali, and sweet dreams, we are all still thinking of you. x

Morpheus is the God of Sleep - he knew what he was doing when he gave his name to morphine - rest, relax and feel better in the morning.
Next time I come, I'll bring you some wine to go with the chocolate - yes, it is possible! It doesn't cure headaches, but it helps you go to sleep!
Stay strong
Love Ewan xxx
Hi Ali, looks like you're asleep at the moment so... Morning!! Been keeping up with your attempt to conquer the European Wine lake, chocolate mountain etc, and the effort you're putting in is extraordinary! Maybe the European Parliament should send a thankyou note...
Sounds like you got the best of the sun this week, the clouds have just dumped here in Bristol. Thanks for not putting the nekkid chariot photos up, this is after all a semi-public place!
We're all still thinking of you;
Keep strong, drink good wine and hang in there!

Hey Ali,
Home now and just checking in on you before I head off to bed and how lovely to read a new post. Horrible to know that you felt so rotten yesterday but so pleased today was a better day. I thoroughly enjoyed all the morphine I had after my back ops - possibly a bit too much tho!
Sleep easy Ali and enjoy your vistors tomorrow.
Sending you great big hugs through cyber space.
Best thing about today is it's my big brother's birthday and he's.....ancient!!

Some lovely words from Marcel Proust for a very charming gardner indeed (putting the Rainback into your garden)..
"Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardners who make our souls blossom".

Morning Ali,
Your missing the Euro's ! great games last night, especially the water polo that the Swiss & Turks played in, bloody Ronaldo scored again as well..... Watch that morphine - heard it is addictive ! !
Keep the vino going, may I recommend anything from the Western Cape in sunny SA. Failing that 12 pints of Stella....
keep blogging.
Dizz.
Morning Ali,
I hope the morphine has helped with the headache and you're feeling better today?
Did you go skooshing with your Nan? I'm still very intrigued to find out what this is all about - any hints?

Hi Ali. Sorry we missed you on Monday but had a good chat with Mum & Dad and met jeanette for the first time. Hang in there fella, we know you are a fighter. Marg & peter
Morning Ali,
I like Dizz's description of 'water polo' for last night's Swiss v Turkey game! I was out for a training run during that but checked the radar before setting off to try and get between storm clouds, but no luck. The rain started just after they kicked off when I was about 5k out. It's official - my watch is waterproof, I am not. When the lightning started at 9k I decided that completing the planned 14k was just silly and squelched home to a hot bath (not banana shaped sadly) and am content with 11k. I think it was bad weather karma for being out for a run when I should have been watching Switzerland play.
I hope you have a better day today. Have a good morphine trip. Sleep and rest well. I wish you lots of sunshine, enjoyable visits and a pain free day.

Hope you had a really peaceful sleep last night and that today is better for you. If you do decide sleep is the best today, you certainly wont be missing any good weather, it is pouring with rain here in Chelmsford.
We are all thinking of you constantly Ali and wishing you a peaceful, painfree day. Take care sweet Ali, we love you so much.
All our love and hugs as always to you, to your mum, dad, Jeanette, Simon, Jo and all the Rainback crew.

I really hope your headache has eased off a bit today. I love the photo of you and jeanette and the one of the cows...reminds me of how lovely the Alps are in summer eh!
I am walking my dad's dog alot. He is a German Shepherd\husky\sheep murderer\mentalist! I love him! Well, when I say that I "walk" the dog...he actually drags me around! It's lovely here in mid-wales, wish you could see it.
Just listening to Radio 2 on the computer and "Smooth Criminal" is just playing...always reminds me of you Ali xx
Anyway, get lots of rest

Hi Ali (and family),
Sorry I wasn't able to see you last weekend. Jeanette and I had a lovely lunch in Birkhamsted, it's a nice little town. Sorry to hear you weren't feeling to good yesterday I hope today is a better day for you.
Nikki did really well in her triathlon and has raised lots of money for the HOSF - she's a star.
PS - I hope you've managed to enjoy a bit of the lovely weather you've had over there. We're still waiting for summer over here....
Lots of love,

Hi Ali,
Do hope today is better than yesterday and thank you so much for keeping us updated. Sent a wee card yesterday as have not managed to get hold of you but thoughts are with you all constantly. Lovely photo's as ever, Jeanette is extremely photogenic and of course, your smile is contagious! Lots of love and thoughts, hope today goes OK. Love Sally XX
Hi Ali
Sorry to hear that you felt rough yesterday! Hope the morphine worked...marvelous stuff!! And your headache is better.
Off to Spain for a week tomorrow so will miss reading your blog everyday.
Take Care and Stay Strong.
Will be thinking about you.

Oi Rainback,
Good to see you chugging down the wine and morphine. Sounds like you've moved out of the 'shandy' league that we used to share!
It also seems you are a master of self photography - I've seen a few of those 'point back at me' shots on the blog.
Hope you're feeling better today dude. Hope to be in touch soon!
Dave Morris
Ali,
Great to hear from you - sorry about the head though. Hope you feel a whole lot better today.

Hi Ali
Hope the headache has eased off now and that you are having a better day.
The showers have stopped here and and the sun is coming through at last!
Last night a friend of ours hosted a charity event in aid of the Willow Foundation (who organise days like your Arsenal trip) which raised £17,000. I spoke to your mate Bob (Wilson) and he said that he has been reading your blog and found it very inspirational (as do we all). When he spoke about his daughter (who was the inspiration for him setting up the Willow Foundation) she seemed to possess the same courage and determination as you, during her illness. Hearing more about the Charity really opened our eyes to how the special days that they organise can really give people such special memories for themselves and their families.
Hoping you managed to have a restful day today, with maybe a bit of skooshing as well.
All our love and best wishes to you all

Hi Ali - that's some rock and roll diet you're on - is it one of Keith Richards'...?.
It looks like your blog is now challenging Oz Clarke's for influencing the consumption of wine! I was on the wine society's web-site for some of the highly recommended paarl, poised to click it into my basket, when it vanished live in front of my eyes! Not a drop left! Nice one thirsty bloggers - can't have been anyone else.
What's the next recommendation, and we'll have a punt at clearing that out too!
Cheers
Kelvin
Hi Ali,
I can really sympathise re. the headache, used to get some killers myself which nothing would ease. (Maybe I should have tried morphine?!) Sounds as if today was better - do hope so.
Glad you were able to enjoy some time on the patio earlier in the week - sadly the forecast for the next few days is not very promising .. hmm!
We check the blog as often as possible to see what the Rainback team are up to in Berkhamsted and are thinking of you all -
much love,
L & R
Forget Delia, we now have the Rainback effect, any product mentioned on the blog is sold out instantly - South African Paarl, Montezuma Chocolate (can't believe you were giving the stuff away) Eggloos, cream egg twisty things...what next.
Night night
L x
Hey Ali,
Another long day but finally home now - will be glad when it's the weekend.
The latest instalment on the Exbats is that the Eggloo, which is made of plasticy resin stuff is quite slippery and they keep slip sliding out as they head for the ladder. So Glyn's gone in search of some kind of non stick tape that he can attach to the ladder and main entrance to the Eggloo so they don't slip anymore - bless their feathery little feet!
He's being quite fatherly and was explaining how Wingy (broken wing)has not yet produced an egg, whereas the others have produced several. I asked if that meant she's for the pot and he explained to me, very firmly and almost exasperatedly, that I should be more understanding as she's obviously a little traumatised! He's gone from mean and moody internal auditor to a gooey mess in a week. The non exbats arrive on Saturday....watch this space!
I hope you've had a lovely day spending time with all the Rainbows and are feeling a little better. Also I hope you managed, despite the rubbish weather, to get some fresh air in your Naked Chariot.
Thinking of you all and sending lots and lots of love
J-A
Hey Ali - hope the headache is sorting itself out, what with the morphine, chocs, wine, etc.
Next recommendation for bloggers (but particularly for Kelvin) from The Wine Society is Coyam 2005 - a Chilean blend of syrah, cabernet sauvignon, carmenère, merlot & mourvèdre. If you want a wine to go with chocolate cake, try Bleasdale's Sparkling Shiraz (yep, fizzy red wine!).
Wine is good for you - keeps the arteries open, puts you to sleep if you need to rest, attracts your mates when you open a bottle ... all those things and more. Ali, let me know when you need a top up, and I'll hand deliver another few bottles for you, mate.
Stay strong
Love Oz & Jilly!!! xxx
Hey Ali
Sounds like you have got it sorted with wine, morphine, chocolate and football on the telly.
For some strange reason whenever you blog about enjoying a nice glass of wine I am reminded about playing Cardinal Puff - don't know how the two things have become linked in my mind. Probably something to do with the New Gen social where I passed out on the bread table - oopse! Good times, didn't feel quite so good the next day though!
You will be pleased to hear that Alison and I have a big A to Z Expedition in the New Forest this weekend, and we have already got a few bookings for July 2009 so hopefully our hard work is beginning to pay off.
Sleep tight

Hello my friend.
I have been reading the blog but the words have failed me as my head is absolutely full of boat and stress. The Boss arrives Monday with three friends for our trip to Greece. Is the boat ready??? is it ****! The relentless Italian rain has scuppered all my efforts. See if I still have a job next week!
As for you, it sounds as though between the wine , chocolate and morphine you should be comfortably numb, a feeling that we have some previous experience of? Maybe! I send you, Jet, Mr & Mrs R, Si, Jo and the boys all of my love and strength. You continue to inspire me to get on and fight against impossible odds, which is what I have to do now. ( have to go up the mast and check the instruments up there).
I will be checking in over the next two days, then we will be without internet for a while (10 days 'ish' while we sail to Greece.
Stay full of the wine, chocolate and morphine and more importantly the warmth and love that you have shown so many people in your life. If we actually reap what we sow, you should be feeling positively Caribbean with Goddess Aphrodite pouring love over you!
Stay strong and fighting.
Big Love and respect,
Dicky M
Dearest Ali
The sun is out today so hope your headache has gone and you can enjoy the day with your wonderful family. Dicky M's last paragraph above says it all - you deserve all the love and care that comes your way. Everyone who has ever met you goes away with the same lasting impression of a super, friendly, smiling guy with so much time and love for everyone. You truly are an inspiration to us all and your mum and dad should be so very proud of you, which I know they are. You are one in a million, an absolute gem in every respect - there should be more Ali Rainbacks and then this world would be the perfect place.
Thinking of you constantly Ali and hoping you have a good day today with all those around you who love you so much.
Love and hugs and always

Hey Ali,
I got up this morning and read the blog, picked up Ewan's latest wine tips, made a mental note to order some of both his recommendations as soon as possible and then as I was pootling about in the kitchen it dawned on me that even now, when you're feeling sh*te you are still making us smile and sharing so much with us. I wouldn't have known that you can get wine to go with chocolate cake without your blog, I wouldn't have read and cried at Linz' amazing words, I wouldn't have laughed at all the stories that have come from people who've known you over the years and I wouldn't have also felt the love that so obviously surrounds you, without your blog.
So, what I really wanted to say was thank you. Thank you Ali for still giving us so much.
Better do some work now.
Lots of love

Hi Ali
Glad to see the sun has been shining for you again...
Have not been able to blog as much as internet access trickier having been on my travles but thinking of you all the time and sending you and Jeanette virtual hugs...
Keep up the wine and chocolate habit clearly you have your priorities right :)

Hi Ali,
I've been away in Spain and missed your blog. Still thinking of you and yours.
Got back yesterday and now I think i've caught up on chickens, chocolates, chablis, chunder, charity thriathlon, chariot scooshing, and all the other stuff.
It's pretty exhausting catching up on a full week at once (and thankfully I'm only reading it, although the wine sounds ok).
I suppose I'd better do some work now...
Your blog and the comments you receive are simply "WOW".
Thank you...and much love to you all,
from Jane (Whitham) x
Hi Ali
I think J-A is so right in what she said above.
Your blog has brought so many people together and makes us laugh and makes us cry. In this dreadful situation you are still doing what you do best - inspiring us, giving of yourself and making us realise over and over what a privilege it is to know you and have you as a friend!
Love you Ali

I was listening to some classic Dolly P on the radio just now, not sure if it's her new song 'better get to livin' basically telling us all to stop whinging and get on with it - it makes me think of you, and how your positivity pulls us all up short, every day, and makes us want to live better lives. Ali Rainback / Dolly Parton - who knew they had so much in common hahahahahaha !
Ali,
Thinking of you very much as France V Netherlands plays in the background ( presently 0-1 to Netherlands, although France hitting back now! ), and just wanted to send you our love to all around you and especially you for just being you. Thank you for keeping us all up to date and your lovely photos, brilliant photos, which tell so many stories and so many smiles of fun, laughter, your friends, family and your journeys. THINKING OF YOU LOTS. Hope you have a good weekend, as best you can and Jeanette and your family are there to share it with you. Much love and thoughts, Sally XXX

Hope the morphine didn't kick in till the end of the Holland - France game! Or perhaps you asked Matron for an extra dose to make sure it did!
It was nice how Henry greated Van Persie at the end of the game but did you see the regret in his eyes - a) for being French and b) for leaving Arsenal!

Hi Ali,
I hope you are feeling better today than the the day.
Its a lovely day in Harpenden, hopefully you can get out in the garden today and take in some rays!!
Imagine it as the three horseshoes beer garden of old, drink some wine in the sunshine.....
The Euro's are really painful to watch considering we are not there, but I hope either Holland or Spain win as they have such good players in their sides and they are such under achievers. They are playing great football...
Have a good day today, stay strong mate..Always thinking of you.

Hey Ali,
Sitting in front of the tv tapping away into the laptop and I thought I'd drop you a quick Hello. It was sunny here this morning but is a bit grey and chilly now. Never mind. Although I am still doing some work it's definitely better than being sat in the office.
I hope you're having a lovely day. Snoozing lots then seeing all your family when you wake.
Am waiting for a text from Glyn showing me his "posh" birds - expecting it any minute now - will keep you informed!

Sorry it has been a week or so but never far from our thoughts.
I love the photo of you and Jeanette, a perfect couple! Not much happening our end except preparing Harry for golf in the morning. He goes to a local range on a Sunday for an hour for the under 5's and loves it, better swing than me.
I am sad to hear you have been under the weather and hope you get your unique sparkle back soon.

Hey Ali,
It's a beautiful day here in Colchester and I've hung my washing out already! I don't often get organised, but for once I am.
The Posh birds arrived at Chez Glynn yesterday and are being harrassed by one of the ExBatts - he's threatened to call that chicken Janey, because she's the bossy one. Not bossy, I explained - determined! Wingy has visited the vet and is on antibiotics. I have visions of Glyn trying to convince a chicken to swallow tablets!
I believe you've been sampling smoothies. Have you tried Tesco's Breakfast Thickie? It has oats in with the fruit so is thicker than a smoothie, so might slip down quite easily, you can kid yourself it's healthy and it's really nice. I assume they do big bottles but I found little ones by the sandwiches etc. Just thought I'd mention it in case you'd not already found it.
I hope you get your naked chariot outside today and enjoy a snooze in the sun and the company of all the Rainbows. We're always thinking about you all and hoping life is peaceful over in Berko.
Love you lots, Ali

Hi Ali, Jeanette and family,
We had summer in the south West of France yesterday - but today it's over. Toulouse had the worst May on record, but I heard that Scotland had the best May ever!!!
It's Laurent's first fathers day, (although plenty of practice with step-papa day) so we've spoilt him with chocolate and breakfast in bed.
Hopefully the sun is shining on you today. You're constantly in our thoughts.

Hi Ali
Thought alot today about you. I went out walking the dog in the forestry for quite a few hours, amazing views and very hot (which is unusual considering it's Wales!).I thought how much you would love it as it reminds me some days of the Alps in the summer, although not quite as steep! You would love the dog as well. He is a bit crazy, but only young and is getting better behaved by the day. He will walk and walk for hours.
It certainly is the simple things in life that are the best eh!
I even had my shorts on and little chubby white legs out! - scared the sheep I can tell ya!
Hope you are comfortable hon' and getting plenty of time with your folks and with Jeanette.
Love you

My name is Frances, I'm Steve from Cagnes sur mer's wife. I've never met you, but I think about you and Jeanette and your family a lot, think and pray and question why... Your blog is a beautiful testimony to what an amazing person you must be, so loved and appreciated by so many people.
I would just like to say that some how, one day everything must return to sanity and order, and incredibly there will be logical and reasonable answers. An extra dimension where we will understand.
May Love and Peace hold you tight as you sleep and wake, you and all your loved ones and never let you go.

Hi Al,
Hope you wake up feeling better.
I'm feeling fat after a massive weekend of eating. I literally ate all the bad stuff you're not supposed to have for almost every meal and washed each meal down with loads of wine. I look like a tramp in a suit.
Am seriously contemplating pulling a sicky for the afternoon and going home to play Wii Mariocarts. This is a particularly good idea as i've only got a few months of being able to do this before our baby girl arrives. Then, i will have to become responsible and stay at work all day on Mondays (or get a hotel room for the odd afternoon...).
I love the morphine. It's awesome. Get as much as possible!! When i broke my jaw in Sydney 'playing rugby' I was mixing wine and morphine and didn't want to leave hospital. I developed a mild addiction in 15 days.. When they weaned me off, i realised i didn't have any pain.
Nowadays, everytime i have a heart operation i come out of heavy sedation faking a broken jaw and demanding morphine for the pain... it can be quite embarrasing when i come round in hospital, with jaw tightly clenched shut, demanding morphine for the pain, to hear chinese nurses gathered round the bed telling me that there's nothing wrong with your jaw Mr B... you came here for a heart operation!
keep smiling mate, lots of love from HK

Another beautiful morning.
Just a quickie to say hello and to remind you that you are constanly in our thoughts.
I hope you slept well and have woken refreshed and ready to tackle the day.
I was out like a light until the feline alarm clock went off at 5am. Little monster! Now I suppose I'd better a get a wriggle on and go to work.
Hope you have a lovely day and spend lots of time with your family. Deffo get that bed out in the sun today!
Lots of love

Hi Ali
Sorry I have not been in contact enough – Tom has been cracking the New Gen wip! I thought summer was for flip flops and ice cream! Just finished our advert for Where to Ski and Snowboard. I have used the picture of you when you nearly skied into me (of course – you didn’t as you are a professional!). I have never known anyone who captures the passion of life and passion for skiing in their expression like you. You are truly unique. I better stop as I don’t want to get all poetic - I will leave that to fellow friendly bloggers. I just wanted you to know that I am always thinking about you, especially when I hear the words. ‘Twenty seconds to Comply…’ Matt xx
Morning Ali and family
It's another beautiful day here in Wales, I can't believe how lovely the weather has been since returning from France. I hope it's sunny in Berkhamsted for you and you manage to spend a bit of time enjoying it.
Thinking of you always.
Lots of love
Rach

Thinking of you all every day. Ali, you continue to touch the lives of so many people and inspire us all to be better. You really are one of a kind and I feel lucky to know you. You and your family's strength and ability to keep smiling is truly amazing.
Now I want to tell you a couple of funny Scots jokes. They made me laugh but I had had a few glasses of wine when I read them. Let me know if anyone needs a translator.
A Glasgow woman goes to the dentist and settles down in the chair.
'Comfy?' asks the dentist.
'Govan' she replies.
A Glasgow man - steaming and skint - is walking down Argyle Street when he spots a guy tinkering with the engine of his car!
'What's up Jimmy?' he asks.
'Piston broke,' he replies.
'Aye, same as masel...'
Two negatives make a positive but only in Scotland do two positives make a negative - 'Aye, right.'
This is my favourite:
'What's the difference between The Rolling Stones and an Aberdeen sheep farmer?
The Rolling Stones say: 'Hey you, get off of my cloud.'
And an Aberdeen sheep farmer says: 'Hey McLeod, get off of ma ewe.
A guy walks into an antiques shop and says: 'How much for the set of antlers?'
'Two hundred quid,' says the bloke behind the counter'
'That's affa dear,' says the guy.
'Aye yer right!' replies the bloke
And finally.....
How many Spanish guys does it take to change a lightbulb?
Just Juan.
Ok, so some of them are old and some of them are bad, but classic.
Take care. Sending lots of love to you all.
Debbie (BASI) xx

Good evening Ali and those very special Rainbacks and the lovely Jet.
Well, I managed to pull it off!!!! Boss, wife and two guests onboard. The Boss said the boat has never looked better! It took an awful lot of doing but it is done with a lot of help from my friends here in Le Grazie and from some storming inspirational stuff from you lot.
Leaving for Greece tomorrow at Sparrow's fart so I will be out of touch till I find a hook up in Greece or further down Italy.
Stay chilled and peaceful my friend, soak up a bottle or two (hundred!) and eat all the chocolate you please to. Soak up all the love around you and know in yourself that you are one of the most loved and respected people that I have ever had the pleasure to meet and have as a friend. You are a star!
Sea Fever
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking.
And a grey mist on the sea's face and a grey dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over .
~John Masefield.
I shall steer my boat by many a star and none of them will be as bright as you have shone.
Big Love
Dicky M
Dear Alistair,
reading the blog & your loving mum's comments. Thank you all for keeping up the blog. We as always try & pray for you each morning. The weather here in the south of france is not so goode (with a 'E').
My little lovely son Raphael (5 years old) who is mildly autistic has instantly got the hang of syllables & seems to be able to work out how to spell unknown words......
He is full of surprises..... He is late with speech & not so good at communication, he screamed a very lot for 2 years.... he learned the alphabet upper & lower case himself through watching sesame street. He could write the word STOP at about 3 years old but not in kiddies writing but exactly as the stop sign. In fact he didn't really learn to write letters & numbers as other kids do, he just wrote them correctly first time.
We now have much hope as thank God he is so much easier than before & we also have a lot more understanding of him too....
Why is this???
At work when I am making another (another) hole in the building I am just doing the neccesary, when someone else is bashing the building they are just being noisy & are deliberatly irritating me.
I thank God again for my new job....other temporary electricians hate it & come & go but I'm content to be somewhere where the overseer doesn't manipulate me & works just as hard as me (or harder).... telling lies is not required.....a simple life.
High point of the day was getting there early & seeing lots of tiny kittens playing around......
God bless Alistair, Jeanette, Mum & Dad & all the rest of the Rainbacks
Steve - Cagnes sur mer
Dearest Ali
Another day dawns and we are forever thankful that we have been so privileged to have you as a friend. Your smile is something we all cherish and always will. You are not only the sunshine in our lives but also that bright star that Dicky M is sailing his boat by (shall steer my boat by many a star and none of them will be as bright as you have shone) That is so true of you Ali and all your family, and friends near and far share this we are certain. One has only to read all the blogs to know how very special you are.
Keep fighting Ali, we all want to share as much time with you as possible.
Have a special day with your dear family, Jeanette and all the Rainbow crew.
All our love and huge huge hugs
The Conways
