Good morning Ali

The sun has just broken through the cloud as I read your new blog, so I hope it makes its way to you in Berkhampstead.

I hope it stays dry as I got wetter than I have EVER been cycling home from work last night - every item of clothing I was wearing was drenched and my trainers were doing a good job of setting a new world record for the greatest volume of water ever held in a shoe.. A very attractive look, I am sure you will agree.

Thinking of you and sending you and the team all my love

Sorry to feel you are feeling shite today - is it too early for a glass of red Paal? Or perhaps you could ask Liz the chaplain to smuggle you in some more IPA?!

Your blog is truly inspiring - a testament to you. I hope you can feel the support of not just your fantastic family and friends but also us more remote bloggers who follow from afar and who all wish you continued strength and courage in your fight.

It seems as if you have set up an Ali community here on this blog - I now find myself looking for updates from other bloggers - Russ and their Baby, J-A and her dressmaking and bush trimming (!), the amazing Linz who just nails the sentiment every time, incredible supportive and loving Conways, Steve and his struggles in Cannes, not to mention Ewan....!!!

Look after yourself Ali - you are a true star who continues to shine brightly

Hi Matey,

Sorry to hear you not feeling to chipper this morning. Hope you didn't scoff all the Jaffa Cakes to make yourself ill.

Weather looks like it's turning a bit better so it won't be long before we can set up the barbie on your terrace. Ha!

Love, Philip (and Dino the runaway stinking dog). x

Hi Ali,

The sun is trying to burn through the cloud in Mayfair and has already broken through in Balham. With luck the sun will shine over Berko today. Sorry you don't feel so good, hopefully you'll feel better soon.

We had a load of friends round for Sunday lunch and toasted you with some 1997 St. Julien - it was gorgeous. I'll try and get a bottle to you so you can share it with the family.

I didn't know Si was a hairdresser!

Jo and I are thinking of you.

Hi Ali,

Hope the 'fidgets' relent and the sun is on it's way. Just packed Tom off on his first wee outing with the school to sunny Walton on Naze!! Bucket and spades at the ready, so thank goodness it was not yesterday.....30 5-6 year olds in 'that' weather to entertain would have been fun!! Am sure you would have handled it no problem! You remind me of my cousin who is a brilliant teacher and communicator, especially with children, like you a complete star and inspiration to others.

Do hope your day improves, thinking of you all lots and lots.

Hello mate,

Well as you know, thanks for the text, Ava Rae arrived yesterday (03/06/08) at 01.51am weighing 8lb 8oz (3.85kg) and is absolutely gorgeous but I am biased. Belle did a magnificent job and is a bit sore and very tired, but I brought them both home last night and we had a reasonable night all things considered. Ava is the spit of of big sister Cara who thinks she is really cool and can't wait to dress her in all things pink. Hopefully this can be a bit of sunshine through the rain.

Nice to hear you are keeping yourself well groomed and I could really do with one of those massages. I'll think of you today as it is mine and Cara's job to bake a chocolate cake (out of a packet, no Jamie Oliver in this Essex boy I'm afraid) for the expected visitors later today.

So its a big hello from my little fidget bottom Ava Rae to big fidget Uncle Ali,

Russ, Belle, Cara & Ava xxx

We checked the blog before leaving home this morning for work but there wasn't an update so we were so happy later on to see Wednesday morning blog despite you feeling a bit down. Anyway as all the above comments have said the sun is beginning to pop it head out and hopefully will be shining on you too bringing that gorgeous smile back to your face.

Lucy's massage must have been so therapeutic for you but not sure about Si's hairdressing skills we shall have to wait and see if he has passed the test!

You are sweet enough Ali but with all the chocolate cake and chocolates inside you you must be really really sweet now! The girls will be falling for you so watch out Jeanette! only joking, you couldn't have found a better match than Jeanette, she's a star.

Hope you get out into the garden today in Chorlton and that the sun shines on you. Have a good day Ali and we send all our love and hugs to you, to your mum, dad, Jeanette, Simon, Jo and all the Rainback crew.

Ali,
I am very happy to say that it is finally sunny in La Spezia and I am prepping, varnishing and painting like a dervish (who ever said that this is a cushy job!).
Sorry to hear you're not in the sunshine and not feeling too sunny either. It will be there soon by the sounds of the 'bloggers'.
Something to have a chuckleabout until the sun comes out is the memory of walking (well stumbling) back to Fat Nick's place and being stopped by the 'Rozzers' and the poor sod asked where we lived. I turned around and said "I live in Poole, I'm a sailing Instructor" and then you followed with "I live Courcheval in France, Im a ski Instructor". The guys face was a picture! I wonder if he has done even a quater of what you have with your life? I very much doubt it, there are few who have.
You are a legend in your own lunch break my friend and truely inspirational.
Big Love and Respect,

Dicky M.

Anonymous said...

Hey Ali

Who'd have thought it - a wibbly-wobbly Dicky M being stopped by a Rozzer?? Surely some mistake ;-) You really out to be careful about the company you keep!

I'm thinking of nominating Si for the Vidal Sassoon Awards as Best Sheep Shearer. This means he would join J-A who has apparently already been nominated for Best Bush Trimmer.

First Gang Show rehearsal is only three months away - problem: we have 161 people who want to be in it this time (we only have 116 places!). Still, it's a great problem to have, especially as we are consistently hearing that "young people don't have anything to do these days". Scout membership in Harpenden, Wheathampstead and Kimpton has grown by 11% in the last year, with over 1,000 members - the great traditions that you were part of still abound.

Stay strong, Ali

Hey Hello Ali!

Firstly sorry to hear you are not feeling to good today...I think a good doze of Jaffa cakes or whatever other choccie like material you can get your hands on.

Secondly I did not know that your brother had a hidden talent ......Vidal sasoon watch out. :-)

If it makes you feel any better it is rather pooey here in Geneve and it has pretty much been raining all week!! Yuck!

Time Megeve this weekend which I am actually dreading as have not been on my bike for 2 weeks ( or perhaps even a little bit more) so I am hoping that the power of the Cervelo on its own gets me up the col de colombiere ...or alternativley just a good dose of grany bars. What is good news though is that I have persuaded to girls to do it with me so I hopefully will not be a norma nae mates the whole way round for the 4th time.

Hugs and hope the sun comes out

Hey Ali, I thought only us scots said 'shite'! but since u are feeling a bit poo thought I d say hello! When my matey, A, went through what u r she loved the general chit chat, and so thought you would too...Here too in sunny Seez its raining down, and has been for ages. I had cancelled horse riding so many times I thought I d just give it a go rain or not..so there i was trotting along in the valley near the cycle path, in the peeing rain! It was fab though! The snow melting, along with the rain means the Isere is chundering down, but not quite bursting its banks yet!
Its funny how you always feel like going swimming when its raining! Get wet but inside!!...so thats what Carla and I are doing today.
Hoping this reaches you feeling less poo.
Better end it in rhyme as thats what I do!
take care of u, wee friend e x

Hey Ali,

I hope you're feeling a little better than you did this morning and that as the sun has come out you're spirits have lifted.

Mum saw the Rheumatologist this morning who has no explanation currently of what is wrong with her (quite frankly, where would one start?! - Just kidding, Ma!) and has said keep taking the steroids and slow down a bit. Well ok he didn't say the last bit, I did, but she says she's feeling a bit better. We talked about you and the "shite" word - underused I felt and yet very expressive. Nice choice. Hopefully no longer indicative of how you're feeling though.

I'm having a friend round for lunch on Friday, which means I have to start tidying up tonight as we're lazy so and sos and the place is wrecked.
I was working with someone today who even has tidy drawers. I mean honestly, who has time to keep their drawers tidy. Obviously, when she went to make the tea I had to have a little rearrange and left a few things "on the cock", as my Father would say - again another underused expression.
Once she sees the amount of work I have in store for her she won't have time for tidy drawers anymore!

Best two things so far a little bit of sunshine and Chinese for dinner - woohoo!

Hope you're feeling better, Ali.

Sending lots of love

Hi Ali

We hope you're feeling a bit better this evening. Nice to get a bit of sun at last! Hope you got out in the garden today.

Can't wait to see the haircut - hope you're going to post a picture.

We are having a nice rest at the moment as we have packed Emma off this week on a school trip to France so no gym/diving in the evenings. Although, as she said, she would rather be going 'home' to Courchevel than northern France. Oh well, only another 5 or 6 years till she does her gap year with New Gen. You have put her name down haven't you?!

Keep smiling!

Thinking of you all,

Love and best wishes

Dear Alistair,
All is well here. After three days of a real symphony of noise, dust & much mixing of plaster, I have realised how much better off I am.
No one lying to the boss, no one trying to make others do all the work, & no going up & down 4 metre ladders all day.

Yes things are looking up, I am being taken care of as are my little family.....

Driving to Marseille on saturday to meet some people......

Wishing you well...God's best blessings to you all & of course Jeanette.

Hope you are feeling a little more 'tip top' this morning. I have to go to Doc. to have some fluid on my knee looked at. Can't work out if it is due to the kilometers of work I do sanding the deck on my knees or if my body is making a new bladder for all the tea, beer and wine that I consume. Guess we will see.

Hey Ali,

The sun is shining here in Colchester - Essex' capital of culture - ok I made that up aswell but the sun really is shining and the sky is blue so hopefully the weather is similar in Berko and you can get out for a spin in your dragon (got the right "your" this time). Would it not be an idea to have a few time trials? See who can push you round the block fastest - I think that could add a little competition to the day...

Meant to say yesterday Congratulation to Russ and family!

Also, are you really sure Simon has any relevant experience to bring to the role of hairdresser - although to be fair, last time I saw him he did have a full head of hair.

Hope today is a better day and you have lots of fun. Honestly, introduce the time trials over breakfast and just whip them all up into a competitive frenzy.

Today...

I wish you a day of ordinary miracles:
A fresh pot of coffee you didn't have to make yourself;
An unexpected phone call from an old friend;
Green stoplights on your way to work or shop;

I wish you a day of little things to rejoice in:
The fastest line at the grocery store;
A good sing along song on the radio;
Your keys right where you look.

I wish you a day of happiness and little bite-size pieces of perfection that give you the funny feeling that the Lord is smiling on you, holding you so gently because you are someone special and rare.

I wish you a day of Peace, Happiness and Joy. They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them.

hi ali,

i can't beleive it has taken me this long to write on your blog.

i have been following your progress over the last however months. it saddens and inspires me inequal amounts. i wish i had written more and sooner but for one reason or the next, boyish laziness?, i didn't.

even now, i don't really know what to say. i am writing this epic piece from aboard the dolphin oil rig, somewhere off the north sea. exactly where i have no idea.

it's been a while so i guess i had better go back a little. as you know the winter was awesome. i found a renwed passion for skiing and the 3 valleys which had been close to leaving me occassionally, during the last couple of seasons. have been thinking that maybe i should try another resort for a season or 2 and i was close to going to val d'isere but then i seemed to stumble into a new girlfriend amnd that put the brakes on that. which i am happy about. very happy.

tis a new thing for me to think about someone else for a change but i am enjoying it and hopefully something good will come of it. always worth a shot wouldn't you say? i'm sure you would!

now is the summer so is the season for oilrigs and surfing. i know which one i prefer but sadly i can't do one without the other. i am on a rig just now for the next 3 weeks then home again. am going to the island of tiree off the west coast of scotland. never been before but can't wait. me , the lady, some waves and a cottage on a remote island off of the west coast. sounds perfect to me.

anyway, i'll keep checking in on you and try write again. i really hope, and can imagine, you are still smiling that infectious smile of yours everyday. and i hope that never leaves. it's a smile that i'll never forget.

stay strong and keep up the good fight.

Hi Ali

Sorry to hear you were feeling rubbish this morning, I'm hoping things improved through the day a bit for you my friend!

Well, the 3 day New Gen' strategy meeting has come to a close this evening. It was great to have our base at center Parcs, and we got alot done, but we all missed you being here and you were talked about alot. I missed you being here so we could be daft, but Tom certainly had a good go at it in your place...his charades was pretty interesting. "Sudden Impact" the film was one of them and he just continually threw himself at the door to try to describe it. After about the 10th time we had to get him to stop for fear of injury!

Anyway, We really missed you Ali and wish you had been here, but you certainly were in our hearts and minds, if not here in body.

Hey Ali,
I trust you have recovered from your visit from PK. I did ask him to pass on a big hug from me, but he said 'Not sure Ali's imagination is THAT good'. A hug's a hug at the end of the day though, right?

Oh PK was talking about your bum today. He reckons we might have photos of your bum taken following an episode of cheating at paintballing some time ago. Apparently your punishment was a full on assault on your butt cheeks (with paintballs) which then required photographic evidence of the marks this left behind (so to speak). I love hearing these stories. Will need to see if Ros will stick the pictures in the next BASI News!

I think about you every day Ali. Sending you lots more hugs and a big kiss....Mwah! and lots of love to you and your wonderful family.

Hi Ali

It certainly is raining in Bozel - seems to have been for about 3 weeks!! Brilliant!! kiddie activity for the afternoon is swimming in Aigueblanche.
I hope you are doing ok and you are having a good day.
I think you are having more summer like conditions than us so i hope you are able to get outside and visit your tree.

Thinking of you loads.

Hi Ali, Jeanette & Family

Sorry to hear you were feeling shite the other day I hope Ros and the team have helped you to feel better. I still have St Martin de Belleville webcam and Courchevel set up on my Gmail page (yes I am a geek!) and it has been very gloomy and wet out there. We have had more sunshine this week and hopefully you too. James is chuffed today as he has finally been offered a full time and permanent (until he goes off skiing again!!) job at a local supermarket with 15% discount for us all! He has had quite a lot of rejections as not many people seem to want to employ an out of work ski instructor!! Thinking of you all as always, The Edwards Family

Hey Ali,

I thought I’d left a message earlier but I must have not pressed the button.

We had to take Sidney cat to the vet this morning for his annual jabs. Everytime we go, we tell them they’ll need a nurse, a sheepskin and the gauntlets because he switches, in a nano second, from pathetically soft, small, runt of the litter cat, into PsychoCat with extra limbs. We got the usual response of “Oh, I think we’ll be fine, don’t you Sidney”. So, after she’d mopped up her blood, the vet went off to fetch a nurse, the sheepskin and the gauntlets. He’s so badly behaved. Now I know how my Mother used to feel at every Parents Evening at school.

I was then quite badly behaved myself in the fabric shop. I decided last night I didn’t like anything in my fabric stash and had to find something special for my frock for my cousin’s wedding. I found some gorgeous red silk burn out/devore chiffon, but obviously had to buy silk lining too. I may have to cut up my credit cards after today. Well…after I’ve bought the shoes, bag and hat to match, anyway!

I hope you’ve had a lovely Saturday with lots of visitors and that The Chorlton Races are rivalling Ascot. Who’s the fastest so far?

Love the pictures – where is that fab pool?

Thinking of you lots. The earlier poem is so true. It does take a lifetime to forget someone special. Chin up, Chicken.

Lots of love

Dearest Ali

So nice to read Ros's blog that you are a shining light to everyone at St.Francis. You are also a shining light in the big wide world of Ali bloggers. You are an inspiration and teach us all how to be better people. Your blog should be spread across the headlines to show all those selfish, disrespectful people of this world what they should be but I guess that is wishful thinking sadly.

We love you so much Ali, you are a precious gem, a bright star, someone to be looked up to.

Hopefully we will read a happy blog from you soon, we are all waiting.

All our love and hugs to you Ali, and lots of love to your dear mum, dad, Jeanette, Simon, Jo and all the Rainback crew. Have a good night with sweet and peaceful dreams.

The Conways
Chris, David, Stewart, Jo, Freya, Sarah and Daniel xxxxxxxx

Hi Ali

I just want to say how inspirational reading your blog has been these past few months. Your bravery and good humor never fail to amaze me, and it certainly gives the rest of us a metaphorical kick up the ass when we are complaining about trivial matters.

As a trainee nurse, I can appreciate Ros's comment about how much you are teaching the medical team caring for you. In my limited experience, often what you learn from a patient is considerably greater than what the patient learns from ourselves. But as nurses, experiences such as these, improves the quality of the care we give in the future. Your cheerfulness, interaction and humor sounds greatly valued.

I think back a lot to those care-free days at Kimpton Junior School. Mr Kent's class where I have no real memories of doing any work whatsoever. Lots of painting and messing around. School sportsdays, british bulldog in the playground. Mrs Fox ticking us off at lunchtimes and school choir concerts with Mrs Newton. I remember you with your natural charm, ease and sociability with people. You were popular and very well liked then, just as you are today.

I send you best wishes. Im sorry to hear you felt 'shite' a couple of days - I hope the sun is shining for you today. You are in all our thoughts.

love from a fellow Kimptonite
