Ali has had a difficult day and due to heavy sedation is increasingly tired and sleeping more and more.
Time is precious and potentially short so therefore we have decided that it is in both his and our best interests to limit visiting to family only.
I know many of you wanted to see him but I hope you will understand and respect our decision so that we can spend this special time together with him whilst we can.

I am going through a hard and stressfull time on the boat at the moment, lots of pressure and little time, but that's all a load of irrelevant shite really, isn't it? It is amazing how little anything else matters in the face of what you are going through.
Incredible what we take for granted really, our health, our family and friends, our lives, what we assume will always be. Strength and character are shown when the unexpected arrives on our door step and all of you have shown that these qualities are in abundance in the 'team of Rainback' let alone in the man himself. Ali is all of the words that people have used to describe him over the last few months and much much more. There aren't enough words to describe adequately who he is and what he has done and the influence he has had and is still having in his life. To be counted as his friend is an honour.
I send you all of my love and strength to help you through this unimaginably hard time.

Hey Ali,
Well, it's officially a miracle. Three days on the exercise bike - helped along by a bit of Sister Sledge and Alison Moyet, which apparantely are "classics" - bloody cheek!
We all completely understand your decision to limit vistors to family, please don't worry about that. I will be forever grateful for the precious few hours I got to spend with you a couple of weeks ago. I had a permanent smile on my face for days after. People kept asking me why and I said "because I saw my friend Ali at the weekend" and they said "but isn't he really sick" and I said "yes, but he's still Ali and he still makes me smile!"
Diana, I will keep ringing but please, please ring me or Mum if there is anything we can do.
Team Rainback has been awesome. You have my utmost respect. I know that's what parents and families are for, but not all them manage it with a smile, a cheerful word and a thought for others at such a difficult time. Please give Ali a massive hug and a kiss from me.
Ali, I think about you daily. When I think I can't do something, you spur me on, when I'm about to snap at my husband - I don't and when something trivial bothers me, I take a reality check.
Best thing about today - it's my friend Sheena's birthday. We're not allowed to tell anyone she's 46!

As caring parents ourselves we feel very much what you must be going through. Ali has been the most amazing young man all the years we have had the privilege to know him and we love him dearly. As you know many years ago we took him on as an adopted son because he made such an impact on our lives and continues to do so. A big hug to everyone - it must be an incredibly tough time - and with such preciousness to the time. Tell Ali his blog has been an inspiration to me and others and to keep smiling - we love his smile.
Although Ali & I have not seen each other a great deal since the venture days, bar the odd Three Horseshoes/Engineer Christmas Eve and the reunion last July, it is his joy of life that makes him so special and how I remember him most. So many people you remember for certain actions, escapades (or even teenage snogs behind the hut). Ali is summarised by his huge grin.
I am expecting our second baby in just under three weeks, so reading and imagining what Ali and his family are going through is particularly poignant for me - OK, lets just admit it, I am a big bowling ball up the jumper mess of hormones :-). Being with Ali over the last through months via his blog makes you realise the important things in life - family, friends, laughter, and joy. Thank you for sharing it with us and letting us be there with you. Hopefully we may still get some snippets if Ali feels up to it.
Need to go and wipe weetabix off Beth (2yrs) now. Cold not warm.

Been reading your blog since I heard your news. Unsurprisingly your charisma and positivity continues to shine through despite the adversity.

From the moment it was announced to the present you have conducted yourselves with enormous dignity and what has shone through in bundles is how tight a family you are.
As a parent I can only hope and pray that I can follow the lessons you have shared with us all. I have not given up hope and rest assured either has all the many people you have touched and inspired.
Ali was described by Danny G to me today as a person how oozed enthusiasm, fun and laughter. He is a person who was hilarious without ever being rude or smutty and has a talent for dealing with people. He has has taught thousands how to ski under the same principles but more importantly taught people how to maintain positive. Ali has never shown resentment and has tackled the issue like a man mountain!
For me Ali is just a fun guy with not a bad word to say, a tremendously generous man with an infectious smile and drive for life. A big, big heart!
I wish I could go back to Courcheval 1998 where we had such a good week, I have not laughed so much in years. I have photos of that week I will cherish forever.
Diana, you and your beautiful family are truely amazing! There are not enough adjectives that fit the bill. Myself and all the hockey boys from Borough Road thankyou all from the bottom of our hearts for sharing this with us and remain positive. We are all thinking shrink!

You have all obviously been researching every avenue that may help Ali and are in touch with every expert you can be and therefore aware of the "radiation knife" featured in an article in yesterday`s (tuesday) telegraph. If not, is was page 14 "Gamma knife offers hope in tumour surgery" This is probably not new to you but we feel so helpless, we feel any breakthrough is worth passing on.

Unfortunately, I don't have the words, but I think about you every day and read your blog every day.
I remember when I came out with PK after I first started with BASI and we had the meeting with you, Matt and Tom. Then there was that modernisation meeting scheduled for that evening and we all piled into the hire car, with you and me squashed in the back, I think I was practically sitting on your knee! And PK's bloody awful driving, only to get there and find the room was locked and nobody had turned up anyway! Which was perfect cos we all went for a beer and you told me your football song story. Your enthusiasm and excitement were just so infectious cos you were talking about something that meant such a lot to you. Meeting you was the highlight of the trip for me. That doesn't say much right enough, because I was spending a week with PK 24/7.....
You make me want to be a better person, Ali, and Diana you make me want to be a better mother. How wonderful for you to have raised such a diamond!

I have followed your blog from the beginning and have been so inspired by your attitude and positiveness. 1650 hasn't been the same without you this winter. You have been missed by so so many people.
Like so many other of your friends who you have inspired when they are doing any kind of sports I have had exactly the same feelings that when running you are a reason that we all keep going.
I remember running the Courch a pied circuit with you one summer evening in 1650 where you encouraged me to keep running and not to stop and drag my feet and walk! For me it was a dam good lesson and i often think of that run especially since you havent been well.
I have just arrived back to the uk today from france to spend time with my family,I really hope that you are able to spend some precious and happy moments with all around you who are there with you. And hope you are able to enjoy the match tonight - even if its not your team playing!

Best thing about today? Chips for lunch. It's the little things that count... but mostly the food things!
I bet it's cosy in the middle of the circled wagons, as Linz wrote so well above. I bet right in the middle there's a great big camp fire to keep you all warm and and a good old gang show style sing along taking place. I can almost smell the toasted marshmallows, and I can hear snippits of 'chitty chitty bang bang' being carried to the bloggers on the warm evening breeze. Everything and everyone you need is there, in the unity of that circle. And the strength, courage and love there are so strong that right around the world we feel the warmth of the team Rainback camp fire too.

I have had you, Jeanette and your family in my mind all day (as I helped to varnish a chalet, in the rain!!) It is hard to put into words the profound effect that following your blog has had on me over the past months.
Although we only ever met a couple of times I feel very honoured to have been allowed to follow your progress in such difficult and personal times.

Thank you so much for keeping Ali's Blog going in these very difficult times. As you already know there is a massive amount of people out there that love and care for Ali. He has touched so many peoples lives along the way and always will.
Ali is and always will be an inspiration to me.
I first meet him years ago, thanks to my now husband Mo, who went through the BASI system with him and then became a trainer with him.
But the moment that I will always remember, was on my second 1 teaching course in tignes, he was shadowing our group, as always he added his big smile and humour which made us all relax. It was my turn to teach, I did half of the lesson and then up the T-Bar, Ali jumped on and said to me, keep it up, you are doing a great job and I would employ you anyday! Just those words were enough to make me believe in myself and pass the course with flying colours!
We are thinking of you all in these very hard times, make the most of this precious time together.
Ali keep that smile going, it lightens up all of our lives!

Dear Ali,
It's amazing how long you can sit staring at a keyboard, trying to come up with a few words that will do justice to the thoughts going through your head.
Although we haven't spent much time together since we met working at the Brocket 16 years ago(!). You have always been an inspiration. I remember you heading off one winter telling me you were going to start up a ski school; I was a rather impressed 17 year old with dreams of living in the mountains (you also called me a 'gay on a tray' - but that's not important right now) - and then meeting up with you 7 years later in Courchevel and seeing that you had achieved exactly what you said you were going to do! I was very proud (and impressed, again).
Since then I've been lucky to share a few adventures with you - all of which, bring a smile to my face (even walking around Annecy at 3 in the morning, the lock on your door broken, hotels full, no phone, no numbers, no money...).
I send my love to you, your family and all those who love and care for you around the world.
Life throws all manner of things at us and I believe that it's not what happens to you but how you choose to deal with it - and you can hold you head up high. I am, once again, very impressed with how you've dealt with this illness, and VERY proud to know you.

I only have good memories of the times we have been together, from the early days in Oz, Christmas in 1650 a few years ago, through to this last New Year's Eve at Lower Farm. Before your illness you lit up the space around you like few people can, teaching us tricks on skis, with spoons, with words, with whatever came to hand, it seemed! For our kids, you were like a pied-piper, conjuror and court jester rolled into one.
Since your illness you have inspired us - and hundreds more, it seems - by your refusal to let it get you down and by your determination to fight it all the way. To maintain a blog like this over so many months when you have had so much else to contend with has been an heroic achievement that makes me realise how lucky I am to have known you.
Ali, you are a top guy, always were and always will be.

Blair here. I'm planning my back-packing trip around Africa at the moment, it'll be good to get on the road again.
I remember I made a joke once when you told me how old you were (I thought you were younger at the time) and you said you were happy because you'd acheived so much already. That is exactly what I want to feel and I guess that is why I'm packing my bags again. It's also why I've jumped on every oportunity that you've given me in skiing!
